O Holy Night

O Holy Night was written by Placide Clappeau in 1847 as a poem, "Minuit chrétiens" also known as "Cantique de Noël". Clappeau was a wine merchant and mayor of Roquemaure, France who wrote poems for his own enjoyment. It was translated into English by the Unitarian minister John Sullivan Dwight in 1885. Adolphe-Charles Adam composed the music. It is a popular Christmas carol which has often been compared with carols like Silent Night, primarily because it talks about Jesus and not Santa and the art of giving gifts.
The Original Carol

The carol reconstructs the night of Jesus' birth. It has been broadcast on radio perhaps more than any other carol, and it has also been translated into many languages. On Thanksgiving night each year, Rich's Great tree in Atlanta is lit to the strains of the highest note of “O Holy Night'. It is a delightful carol. For her fifth album, Merry Christmas (1994), Mariah Carey produced and arranged her own version of “O Holy night” along with assistance from Walter Afanasieff. The same arrangement was later used by Michael Bolton as well. It was released as the album's fifth single in 1996, but was a radio airplay-only release. Carey re-released the song with new live vocals in 2000, and a Sanaa Hamri-directed video created for this version of the song shows Carey singing with a church choir.

Many cover versions of this song exist. Notable artists who have performed this song include Celine Dion, Josh Groban, Kelly Clarkson, Jessica Simpson, Avril Lavigne, Nat King Cole and many others.

O Holy Night Lyrics

Oh holy night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Savior's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till He appear'd and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
Oh night divine, Oh night when Christ was born;
Oh night divine, Oh night Divine.
Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
Here come the wise men from Orient land.
The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our friend.
He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger,
Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend!
Behold your King, Behold your King.
Truly He taught us to love one another;

His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother;
And in His name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! O praise His Name forever,
His power and glory evermore proclaim.
His power and glory evermore proclaim.
