Father Christmas

As the festival of Christmas comes along the air rings with the name of Father Christmas. St. Nicholas, Santa, Santa Claus or Father Christmas, the jolly old man is the favorite of all. No Christmas can ever be complete without Father Christmas and his sleigh of reindeers.

Father Christmas is the British name for Santa Claus. Dating back at least as far as the 17th century in Britain, and pictures of him survive from that era, portraying him as a well-nourished bearded man dressed in a long, green, fur-lined robe. He typified the spirit of good cheer at Christmas, and was reflected in the "Spirit of Christmas Present" in Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol.

Father Christmas or Santa Claus is a part of each and every person's Christmas celebrations. The image of the jolly old man with a long beard, red coat, and sack of toys is everywhere. Father Christmas is seen as a happy and friendly figure living in North Pole and makes toys with his elves and then with the help of his reindeer driven sleigh brings presents and gifts for all children on the night before Christmas.

History of Father Christmas
But where did this Father Christmas come from? The history of Father Christmas can be traced backing England where there was an old English festival held usually in midwinter. The dress then was in green Christmas color. Dressed in red, Father Christmas made his appearance some time in 1870's. The name Father Christmas comes from the Dutch name for St. Nicholas, which is Sinter Klaas.

Father Christmas is basically a thought from the Anglo-Saxon times. The history behind Father Christmas indicates that the character is inspired by Saint Nicholas, a saint in Myra during the fourth century. Santa Claus was shy and wanted to give money to poor people without them knowing about it. One day he climbed up the roof of a house and dropped down a purse full of money through the chimney, which landed in a girl's stocking. Because of this it is believed that Santa Claus or Father Christmas comes down the chimney and places gifts in children's stockings.
