O Come All Ye Faithful Songs Lyrics

Also known as ‘Adeste Fideles’, is one of the most popular Christmas carols after the Silent Night. It was originally written in Latin but has since gone on to be translated into many different languages. It can be heard everywhere during Christmas as children go caroling from one place to another. The carol is called the ‘Portuguese hymn' very often; the reason being that Vincent Novello was an organist at the Portuguese embassy in London where he played the carol very frequently. He also suggested, albeit wrongly that the tune was composed by John Redding.

Many people believe that the tune was composed by the 13th century saint, Saint Bonaventure, however that is most certainly not true.

History Of O Come All Ye Faithful
The carol is commonly attributed to John Francis Wade in approximately 1743. Wade was a Catholic music teacher who fled in 1745 to save himself from the Jacobean rebellion. He made his way to Douai, an English college whre English Catholics were welcomed upon the abdication of James II in 1688. Therefore, it would be wise to attribute the words of this delightful song to Wade.

The English translation of the song almost always uses the title “O Come All Ye Faithful”, whereas the Latin version is termed, “Adeste Fideles”. In the United Kingdom, the most popular tune remains the one published in Oxford Carols for Choirs series by Sir David Willcocks.

The final verse (Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning...) is generally omitted before Christmas day, a notable exception being the traditional midnight mass, where the carol is often sung as the final hymn with the last verse included.

To the same tune is sung a parody or an expression of sorts, “ Why Are We Waiting?” to express frustration at delay at public gatherings.

English Lyrics

O come all ye faithful
Joyful and triumphant
O come ye, o come ye to Bethlehem
Come and behold him
Born the King of Angels
O come let us adore him
O come let us adore him
O come let us adore him
Christ the Lord
Sing, choirs of angels,
Sing in exultation,
Sing, all ye citizens of heav'n above;
Glory to God
Glory In the highest:
O come let us adore him
O come let us adore him
O come let us adore him
Christ the Lord
See how the shepherds,
Summoned to his cradle,
Leaving their flocks, draw nigh to gaze;
We too will thither
Bend our joyful footsteps;
O come let us adore him
O come let us adore him
O come let us adore him
Christ the Lord
Yea, Lord, we greet thee,
Born this happy morning,
Jesus, to thee be glory given;
Word of the Father,
Now in flesh appearing:
O come let us adore him
O come let us adore him
O come let us adore him
Christ the Lord
