Carols By Candlelight

Christmas carols are an intrinsic part of the Christmas tradition all over the world. Each year, children gather and go ‘caroling’ from door to door collecting their treats on the way. But nowhere is this love for caroling more apparent than in Australia where the ‘Carols By Candlelight’ tradition was given wings. Now the same tradition is starting to be followed in other parts of the world though Australia still remains at the forefront.
As the name suggests, the tradition usually entrails a group of people gathering together in an open space such as a park and singing Christmas carols by the light of candles. A band usually accompanies the singers.

It was in 1938 in Melbourne that the delightful tradition of Carols by candlelight first began thanks in part to the efforts of a radio broadcaster with the Melbourne radio station 3KZ, Norman Banks. On Christmas Eve in 1937, he was walking back home from the radio station when he happened to chance upon an elderly lady singing along to the strains of ‘Away in a Manger’ as candlelight shone on her face. It was then that it struck him that so many people spend Christmas alone and something ought to be done to help them lift the load of their loneliness, and he thought it would be a great idea to gather them all together in one place to sing Christmas carols by candlelight.

The next Christmas he put his plan into action and the first ‘Carols by Candlelight’ event was held at Alexandra Gardens, and was attended by a staggering 10,000 people. An unprecedented response for an event which was woefully ‘celebrity-less’. It was only after World War II that the event was moved to its present day location, the Sydney Myer Music Bowl. Any proceeds that are collected from the vent are always handed over to Vision Australia, a charity that works with the visually challenged members of society.

While the Sydney Myer Music Bowl event remains the main focus, attracting more than 30,000 people each year, similar Christmas carol events are replicated in other parts of the country as well. The Sunday before Christmas or Christmas Eve itself are the unofficial dates when these carols by candlelight concerts are organized. Another popular venue for the events is ‘The Domain’ at Sydney boasting an attendance of over 20,000 people each year. Many famous artistes and singers from all over the world attends these Christmas concerts and sing carols to gear up the crowds, these events are also covered on National television.

This tradition of singing Carols by candlelight has also started spreading to different parts of the world and is attracting quiet a bit of attention. It can be a joyful experience to attend any such event which makes one feel like part of something big and grand.
