Black Christmas Movie

Black Christmas is a Canadian horror film and was released in 1974. It was directed by Bob Clark, who had earlier achieved fame directing movies such as A Christmas story (link) and Porky’s. Olivia Hussey stars in the movie as a young college student who must deal with a deranged killer lurking around her sorority. The film makes use of dark corners, off-kilter camera angles, and uses its score by Carl Zittrer sparingly to create a claustrophobic and frightening experience.
Working from a budget of $620,000 and an eight-week shooting schedule, the film was shot in and around Toronto during the winter of 1974. When originally released in the United States, Warner Bros, fearing that audiences might not react well to the name of the movie, changed the title to Silent Night, Evil Night. It performed poorly until its title was changed back to Black Christmas. Later, it was re-titled stranger in the house for a television broadcast.

The Shooting Of Black Christmas
The movie was released with the tagline “Twas the Night, Before Christmas, and All Through the House, a Creature was stirring. The Stockings were Hung by the Chimney with care, but it was Hard to Say that St. Nick would be there. A Christmas of another Colour, brings a Killer on the Loose.” This 98-minute film is a stark and stylish horror/thriller that turns everyone's favorite time of the year inside out. Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder star among an ill-fated houseful of sorority sisters celebrating the holiday season. Festivities turn fatal when obscene phone calls break the serenity and it becomes clear that a psychopath is stalking the house.

Though John Carpenter's Halloween (1978) is generally credited with popularizing the main motifs of the contemporary slasher film genre, many genre aficionados will contend that Black Christmas invented many of them four years earlier. For example, the film features shots from the perspective of the killer, replete with muffled breathing noises. Also, it is a slasher film centered around a holiday, much in the manner Halloween was.
