Most of Ohio is occupied by the prairie grassland and meadows making it a heaven of wild flowers. The White Trillium is the official wild flower of Ohio. It was given its official status in the year 1987 and is grown widely in nearly 88 counties of Ohio. This was done to give Ohio wild flower national importance. Snow Trillium, Wake Robin and Great White Trillium are some of the local names of Trillium.
Some of the common Ohio wild flowers are Ohio spiderwort, Skunk cabbage, Yellow trout-lily, Wild ginger, Dwarf crested iris, Fire-pink, Spring-beauty, Marsh-marigold, Wild columbine, Showy orchid, Pink lady's-slipper, Ill-scented trillium, Toad trillium, Bloodroot, Solomon's-plume and Solomon's-seal. The Painted trillium has been declared endangered by the state and its cultivation is largely encouraged by the Ohio State government. |
