The peony was made the official State flower of Indiana by the General Assembly of Indiana. The naming of peony as the Indiana State flower happened in 1957. Prior to this, Zinnia was the Indiana State flower, from the years 1931 to 1957. The ideal months for the growth of peony flower are May and June.

This Indiana State flower is very much loved and grown throughout the State. Peony blossoms are seen blooming all over the Indiana landscape. This widely cultivated flower is moat popular for decorating graves of the dead and to mourn them on Memorial Day.
