An organization known as the 'Outdoor Circle', worked towards establishing the yellow hibiscus as the Hawaii state flower. The people of Hawaii, through the Outdoor Circle put their efforts to preserve, develop and protect the beauty of the Hawaiian landscape. Initially in the 1920's they started working towards making the hibiscus the Hawaii state flower. Finally in 1988 the hibiscus was officially declared to be the state flower of Hawaii.
The hibiscus is found in many colors in the islands of Hawaii. However only the native yellow hibiscus has been selected as being representative of the state of Hawaii. It is specifically called native, as these flowers have originated and grown in the scenic islands of Hawaii. Unfortunately this beautiful flower is on the list of endangered flower species. One reason for this is that the state of Hawaii does not allow private cultivation and gardening of endangered flowers and the Hawaii state flower.
The hibiscus in Hawaii is seen in varied colors. They can be of a single color or a mixed hybrid species will give bi colored flowers. Hibiscuses are mainly seen in red, yellow, pink , salmon, peach, and orange. These tropical hibiscus flowers can be in single bloom or double bloom.
