An aster flower belongs to the Asteraceae family and is found scattered all over the world, from North America and Europe in the West and China in the East. However, some species of aster flowers are also found in South America and other Asian countries. The name aster is derived from a Greek word which means the shape of a flower. The aster flower is also known as the China aster.
An aster flower is mostly perennial in nature and blooms in the month of August. A yellow center with purple, white, red, creamy yellow, pink or even blue leafy petals all round give the flower a dainty look. Cultivating aster flowers is a common activity among most gardeners and florists even though they have to put in much hard work to reap their fruits of labor. However, once the flowers blossom and spread their array of colors all over, the gardener is the happiest man in town.
The basic criterion for growing aster flowers is laying the right kind of soil in your garden- a properly drained, fertile and sandy soil. Like all plants, asters too need plenty of sunshine. Before sowing, the aster seeds should be chemically sterilized with organic mercuric compounds to prevent stem rotting. The soil should be softened by using the right amount of fertilizers.
The seeds of aster flowers germinate within a couple of weeks and you can soon enjoy the sight of a full grown aster flowering plant. The aster plant can reach a maximum height of 3 feet with the minimum height hovering somewhere between 6-10 inches.
However, an aster plant is prone to many diseases like virus diseases and wilt diseases. As a preventive measure, a gardener should ensure that the aster plant is not planted in the same spot in the garden every year. Dead yellow flowers should be regularly cut-off to allow new and fresh flowers to blossom. However, in case the aster plant is affected by any deadly disease, it should immediately be burnt.
