Alabama State Flower

Dgreetings » Fragrance Flowers » State Flower » Alabama State Flower

Camellia (Camellia japonica) is the Alabama state flower. However there is a very interesting history behind choosing camellia as the state flower of Alabama. In 1927, the Alabama Legislature selected the goldenrod as the state flower of Alabama. This decision was supported by the school children of Alabama. But the ladies of the Butler County did not support this decision. They looked down on goldenrod as just a wild flower. According to them camellia was more suitable to be the official state flower. Finally owing to popular support, camellia was selected as the Alabama state flower on 26th August, 1959. Moreover camellia is found in many varieties. So in 1999, the Camellia japonica variety was finally selected as the Alabama state flower.
Camellia, the Alabama state flower, is found in 82 species. They are very bright colored flowers, available in shades of pink, red and cream. They also have a sweet mild fragrance. Camellia blooms during the months of November to March. During the peek season they blossom in plenty. Camellia flowers grow best in regions with cooler temperatures and well drained soil. The weather condition of Alabama is therefore, absolutely suitable for camellia.

Apart from camellia, other flowers growing in the state of Alabama are:
  • Black Eyed Susan
  • Beauty Berry
  • Mountain Mint
  • Butterfly Weed
  • Southern Blazing Star
  • Smooth Aster
  • Allegany Viburnum
  • Rhododendron
There are several state gardens in Alabama that specialize in Alabama state flowers.
