Celebrated on the third Sunday of every June, Father’s Day is a day to commemorate and acknowledge the role played by a father in the raising a child. He definitely has as much role to play as a mother and his significant in a child’s life cannot be ignored at any cost. Their unconditional love, their sacrifices, their steadfast devotions and their encouragement greatly influences our lives. Hence, the importance of father’s day cannot be ruled out. It is a great opportunity for us to convey our love and gratitude to our father.

| The person responsible for its origin is Sonora Smart Dodd who held her father in high esteem. After the death of Sonora’s mother, it was her father who despite all odds raised her and her siblings. In the eyes of Sonora, her father was a brave, a loving and a great man. |
She was so touched by his generosity and selflessness that she decided to pay tribute to her hero, her father. She chose to celebrate father’s day on 19th of June 1910; her father’s birthday.
Thus, it was she who triggered the idea of having an official day for the observance of father’s day. After a gap of 3 years a bill was produced and the day was made official. Father’s day was however, not given much importance then. It was in fact received with much mockery. It was only forty six years later that the day was given recognition by the then President, Richard Nixon who declared the third Sunday of June as an official day to celebrate Father’s Day.

Since its inception, father’s day gradually gained momentum and is today, celebrated in over 55 countries of the world. Thanks to Sonora Smart Dodd, we today, have a day to pay our heartfelt tribute to our father. Although, the date of the celebration varies from one country to another, it is however, observed with the same zeal. Over the years the celebration of father’s day has gained a startling popularity. People all over make use of this day to thank their father for all the wonderful things that they have them for them. Today, the message of love is communicated through gifts, bouquet of flowers or cards.
