Greek Easter Food

The ancient land of Greece is home to some of the best culinary delights of the world. In fact, Greece is a confluence of East meeting the West, its cuisine has a unique classical Mediterranean influence combined with its "oriental” roots. And if it’s the time of celebration like the Easter festivities, Greek Easter food is definitely the part and parcel of this unique celebration.
Foods always play a crucial role in every religious observance for they are in honor of the gods and goddesses, symbolizing their mighty power. Different types of Greek Easter food have their origins in various religious or ethnic beliefs.

For many of the Greeks, Clean Monday is one of the most important festive holidays as on this day different activities are held. Also on this day, various special Greek Easter foods like calamari or squid, prawns, Soupies Giahni, assortments of bean stews, Taramosaláta, Dolmáddes, Halvás, and of course the very important meat free salads are cooked. On Holy Thursday bright dyed red eggs symbolic of Easter in Greece are prepared in every household. Traditionally it’s believed that Mother Mary dyed eggs to celebrate the Resurrection of Christ. However, the day holds a great religious significance for many Greeks, hence every household prepares traditional Greek Easter food as kouloúria ---a type of dough cookies and Tsouréki - traditional sweet bread especially made for the feast of Easter.

Each food on Greek Easter is served with great care as they bear a specific religious significance. A common Easter Sunday feast comprises of lamb or goat roasted over a charcoal fire, Kokoretsi, special Greek breads, cakes, cookies, varied kinds of wines, Lambropsomo and Magirítsa. One of the major aspects of Greek Easter food lies in the fact that on Easter Sunday every guest is whole heartedly welcomed in the household and is greeted with Gigto kaló tis iméras! Meaning for the good of the day! And with a plate of food it’s an invitation to you my friend to join in our feast. Thus, Greek Easter foods capture the essence of Greek Easter celebrations.
