The various old traditions of decorating Easter eggs are as follows –
In Greece and in the Middle Eastern countries, orthodox Christians painted the Easter eggs in bright red color as a symbol of Christ’s blood.
In Slavonic cultures, Easter eggs had special gold and silver patterns on them.
In Armenia, hollowed egg shells were painted with the images of the Christ, Virgin Mary, and other Christian Saints.
In Germany, hollowed eggs were hung from the trees on Easter and green eggs were given away as gifts on Holy Thursday.
In Austria, eggs were boiled after tiny plants were placed around them. It made white patterns on the egg when the plants were removed.
In Eastern European countries, wax was applied on the eggs forming intricate patterns. The egg would then be dyed in a particular shade. The egg would again be dyed in different shades after reapplying wax on dyed portions to preserve the shade achieved. A patterned or striped egg with many colors was formed in this way.
