Earth Day Activities

The idea of Earth Day has been conceived for instilling consciousness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. The date of Earth day falls on 22 April every year. Being founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson (D-Wisconsin) in the year 1970, this day has now become a cause for celebration across the globe. The first Earth Day was observed in the year 1970. The usual tradition is that Earth Day is celebrated during spring in the Northern Hemisphere and during autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Earth day is marked with a lot of Earth day activities that serves the purpose of infusing awareness among people – be it individuals or corporations. The main activity of Earth day is recycling – where an object is shredded, melted or processed in such a manner that they turn into a new raw material.

For example, aluminum cans can be melted for making more cans, glass can give rise to more glass, cardboard and paper can be a good reason for more cardboard and paper, plastic bags can be made into other plastic products. Though it might take away some good amount of energy, yet the result is quite positive.

Saving energy –

It is essential to turn off electrical appliances and also switch off lights before leaving the room.

Instead of an oven, use microwave to cook meals (consumes less power).

Install ‘Green Power’ for the electricity of your house.

Don’t keep the air conditioner and the refrigerator in a bad condition, repair it immediately.

It is better to use a programmable thermostat for saving down on the heating and cooling costs, at a time when you are not at home.

Insulate the house, water heater and the pipes.

Using less water – During shaving or brushing, do not allow the water to run away, this will help you save water. It is advised to keep the drinking water in the refrigerator. Do not rinse the dishes after putting them into the dishwasher. While using the washing machine, use proper levels of water to wash clothes. The plumbing fixtures & appliances should be efficient. Repair leaks in the house. Water the lawn in the early hours of the morning. Different plants need different kinds of watering. First know the needs and then water the plant. Learn the ways of planting a tree, building a pond, and carry out similar services.

Reusing : Reuse an existing item. For instance, decorate a bag and use it as a gift bag, rather than using wrapping paper. Make a box into a storage. Make a can such that it can act as a pen stand. Make best use of items for reusing. Recycling would definitely be a better option.

Clean Up and Beautify : Arrange an event to clean your adjoining areas or beautify it. It could be near your school, near your house or even your office.
