Durga puja is one of the most important festivals of West Bengal. It is a six day festivity starting from Panchmi (the sixth day) and ends with Bijoya dashami (the tenth day).
On the first day of the festivity, Goddess Durga is welcomed, followed by pujas and celebration in pandals. Durga Puja ends with the immersion of idols in the nearby rivers, lakes or seas on Dashami.
Days of Durga Puja celebrations are divided into Mahalaya, Shashthi, Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, Nabami and Dashami, and are counted on the basis of sunrise and sunset. While the dates also called tithi depends on the rising and the setting of the moon. Panchmi, Sasthi, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami and Dashami pujas are performed after sunrise.
