Durga Puja is an important Bengali festival that celebrates the triumph of goodness over evil. The day is celebrated with gusto and enthusiasm. It is the celebration of life, culture and tradition. As the legend goes, demon called 'Mahishasura' pleased 'Lord Brahma' with his devotion and prolonged meditation. The lord blessed him, with a boon that no man or Deity would be able to kill him.
Soon, Mahishasura started killing people mercilessly and assaulted Gods. To mark the end of his reign of terror over the Earth and the Heaven, Goddess Durga was born. She assumed the shape of young women and pierced his chest to relieve the world from his evil power.
Shubh Bijoya is equivalent to the Dussehra celebration in North India. On this day families wake up early in the morning and perform puja. On this auspicious day, idols of Goddess Durga are immersed in water. To celebrate this day, families visit their loved ones home and wish Shubh Bijoya.
