Mexican Christmas Tradition

Mexican Christmas tradition has many facets; in fact it’s a month long celebration of different events. The festival of Christmas according to the ancient Mexican belief is known as "La Posadas," beginning on December 16th every year, commemorating the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem. The celebration usually lasts for nine days with people visiting the churches to watch the enactment of nativity scenes.
Traditional Mexican Christmas is a symbolic commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ and a deep religious overview of his teachings. The celebration on the night before 24th of December is known as "Novena" or “Noche Buena". ‘Posadas’ are an enactment of looking for lodging of St. Joseph and Virgin Mary, when each family in a neighborhood, organizing a night for the Posada to be held at their home, starting on the 16th of December and finishing on the 24th. The ‘posadas’ have become a community affair with friends, relatives, visiting a different house each evening carrying candles, and asking for “posada” or shelter, the adults are then given a thick punch “Ponche Navideno” and at the end of the journey, the “piñata”, stuffed with candy and fruit, is broken. Traditional Mexican Christmas custom of singing songs like ‘A la ru mi dios’ and ‘Holy Night’ are sung along with special prayers, known as ‘Rosary’ are recited in praise of Virgin Mary.

Traditional Mexican Christmas celebrations of breaking the Piñata is quite popular among the children along with the theatrical plays called ‘Pastorelas’. Traditional Christmas in Mexico is filled with various fun filled activities happening in every nook and corner of the country. Beautiful flower decorations known as ‘Flor de Nochebuena’ has become synonymous with Mexican Christmas decorations. Since the country of Mexico, has diverse cultural origins, the Christmas festivities all over are marked with a great difference. Also authentic Mexican food like ‘Menudo’, ‘asada’, ‘enchiladas’ and Christmas cakes are prepared and enjoyed by the whole family. Thus, Mexican Christmas tradition offers a great chance to know the colorful Mexican tradition and inherent rich culture of the region.
