Merry Christmas

Christmas is both a religious and secular celebration. For Christians, It is a festival that commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, although the exact biblical date of his birth is unknown. However, over the centuries, many people of different faiths across the globe have come to accept this tradition as their own.

Some consistent customary beliefs about Christmas include decorating a tree, exchanging gifts, setting up the Nativity scene with figures made out of clay, visiting friends and relatives, and attending Mass at church.

There is a long history behind this festival. It all started before Christ, when early Europeans celebrated during the winter solstice, looking forward to longer days. They would slaughter the cattle that could not be kept during winter and would then feast on them. The ancient Scandinavian people (also referred to as the Norse) celebrated 'Yule' (equivalent of Christmas) from December 21 through January. They would burn logs and would feast until the fire became extinguished. Moreover, the Germans worshipped the Pagan God Odin during this time. In Rome, people celebrated 'Saturnalia' after Saturn, the God of agriculture, 'Juvenalia' after Rome's children and 'Mithras' in honor of the birthday of Mithra, the infant God, all during the time of winter solstice. As the Christian church gained influence it then introduced the Feast of Nativity on December 25 to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It was during the 19th century that the notion of Christmas was transformed in America through the author Washington Irving's writings about the festival, which described Christmas as a cheerful and pleasant celebration. Slowly and steadily, the idea of Christmas in different parts of the world began to change and it evolved into what it is today! Although, there may be differences in how it is expressed and celebrated throughout the world, the underlying emotions of giving, getting together with family, joy and warmth remain the same.

In India and other countries, a National holiday is observed on the occasion of Christmas. It is a time when families get together, wear new clothes, and buy presents for children. It is a festival that is also looked forward to by those who don't adhere to Christianity. Decorative lights brighten up the streets, shopping malls invite children for pictures with the cheerful Santa, Christmas carnivals and parties are held in large grounds and restaurants.Christmas is also a time when all children are at their behavioral best, praying that Santa would gift them their favorite games and toys as a reward for not troubling mommy and daddy.

With the arrival of Christmas, new hopes for the future are stemmed, old tears and fears are washed away, and faces painted with cheerful smiles make your day! It is as though our surroundings magically transform into a place no less than a Wonderland where every dream is possible. All you need is a little bit of faith mixed with a pinch of optimism and heaps of love and compassion, both for yourself and for humanity.

In the words of Calvin Coolidge, "To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas".

Silent Night lyrics

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
