The festivities of Christmas are masked in various symbolisms like the Christmas tree, Santa Claus, Christmas star, carols and the history of Santa's reindeer. As Santa is believed to come from the far away North, riding on snow on the carriage pulled by reindeers, led by his beloved Rudolph, the red nosed reindeer. Apart from pulling Santa’s sleigh, Reindeer is mankind’s most ancient herd animal. DGreetings presents to you the exciting History of Christmas Reindeer that uncovers the various murky stories related to this ancient animal. |
Rock paintings by primitive peoples displaying reindeers are widespread, as are numerous finds of tools made from reindeer horn. If we go by historical records, there was even a period in European prehistory in a part of France called Dordogne that is sometimes known as “the civilization of reindeer.” The only surviving element of such a civilization might be found in Lapland, which is the northern part of Norway, Sweden and Finland. Though there are only a few thousand Lapps, but they can proudly boast of owning herds of many thousands of reindeer. Apart from pulling the heavily laden sleds, reindeers provide the Lapps with meat, milk, hides to make tents, clothing, hair for weaving and horn, from which they craft household stuffs.
This was a bit of introduction about the popularity of reindeers in the North. Now as we all know Santa comes from far away North Pole and he needs transportation and reindeers are the camels of north and they are cute too! In the year 1939, Montgomery Ward department stores chain tapped the popularity of reindeers in Christmas celebrations when they asked Robert L. May one of their copywriters, to surface a new Christmas story that they could use as a give away to shoppers. However, most of us know about reindeers and their association with Christmas from Johnny Marks song, Rudolph the Red- Nosed Reindeer.
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Rudolf The Red Nosed Reindeer
Had a very shiny nose.
And if you ever saw him,
You would even say it glows.
All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names.
They never let poor Rudolf
Play in any reindeer games.
Then one foggy Christmas eve
Santa came to say:
"Rudolf with your nose so bright,
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"
Then all the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee:
"Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer,
You'll go down in history!"
