Christmas decorations are better known as ‘sapin de Noël’ introduced in early 14th century when people decorated their homes with apples, paper flowers, and ribbons, though this custom has undergone several changes, yet it’s still continued in France where people beautifully decorate their homes, shops, offices and streets.
Traditional Christmas in France is known as ‘Noel’. Though different parts of France, celebrates the festival in their own way, yet the custom of making Yule log-shaped cake, better known as ‘buche de Nol’, meaning "Christmas Log” is quite popular. On the Christmas Eve, majority of the French population, attend ‘la Messe de Minuitor’ or the midnight mass held at the nearby church. After the midnight mass, the whole family enjoys the late supper known as "le réveillon" where traditional dishes like buckwheat cakes with sour cream, oysters, foie gras, turkey, chestnuts and tasty wines such as ‘Muscadet’, ‘Anjou’, ‘Sauterne’ and Champagne are served. The little children also view this occasion as a time to receive gifts and presents, thus place their shoes in front of the fire place in their homes to receive candy, fruits, nuts, and small toys from Père Noël.
Traditional Christmas celebrations in France differs in different regions of the country, as some regions celebrate Christmas on 25th December while in the eastern and northern regions of France, Christmas festivities begin on 6 December known as ‘la fête de Saint Nicolas’. In southern France, ‘Le pain calendeau’, a particular type of Christmas loaf, is distributed among the poor and the needy people.
