“O Come All Ye Faithful” or “Adeste Fideles” is a Christmas carol commonly attributed to an Englishman named John Wade in approximately 1743. The text to the “Carol O Come All Ye Faithful” was originally penned in Latin which is known as “Adeste Fideles” and was intended to be a hymn. The music was composed by fellow Englishman John Reading in the early 1700s. In 1751, the tune was first published in “Cantus Diversi”. In the year 1841 Rev. Frederick Oakley is reputed to have worked on the popular translation of “O Come All Ye Faithful” which replaced the older Latin lyrics "Adeste Fideles". |
