Many people believe that the tradition of using trees originated in United States or England, but it is not so. Germany is supposed to be the place where, Christmas trees originated. Families used to put up the tree in a central place at the house. All of them used to gather around it and decorate it with sweets, ornaments, colored papers, candles, toys etc. Gradually the tree was adopted by other countries and today, it has become an important symbol of celebrating the birth of Christ.

The tradition of using Christmas tree dates back to the 7 th century, when a monk from Crediton, Devonshire, visited Germany in order to teach the people there about the Word of God. According to the famous legends, a fir tree in the shape of a triangle was used by him in order to describe the facts about Holy Trinity of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The fir tree was then worshipped by the people as God's tree and since then the Christmas tree has been regarded as the true symbol of Christianity.

The year 1510 witnessed the arrival of first decorated Christmas tree at Riga in Latvia. Martin Luther in the early 16 th century made use of different candles for adorning the Christmas tree in order to make his children learn about the stars shining in the dark night. Since then the Christmas tree came to be embellished with different Christmas decorations and ornaments.

History Of Christmas Trees In England

Georgian kings from Germany have been held responsible for bringing the Christmas trees to England. All the people of German origin residing in England used to adorn their homes during Christmas with beautiful Christmas trees but British people were not very keen on copying the German traditions and thus the Christmas tree was not very famous with the people of England at that time. Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who as of German origin introduced the Christmas trees to the royal family but the usage of the Christmas trees, was limited to the royal family only. But slowly and gradually the custom of using and decorating the Christmas trees spread to the common people and till now the Christmas trees form an integral part of the Christmas celebrations in England.

History Of Christmas Trees In America

The history of the Christmas tree in America is little bit controversial as till now there is a debate on who actually was responsible for introducing the Christmas trees in the country. According to one legend, a Hessian soldier who was captured in the Noden-Reed House in Connecticut in the year 1777 decorated a Christmas tree in his prison cell and since then the Christmas tree came to be decorated and adorned on every Christmas by the Americans. According to another legend the introduction of the Christmas trees need to be attributed to the German settlers in America during the year 1816.
