Carols by Candlelight is an Australian Christmas tradition that has spread all across the globe. It brings families together to celebrate the true essence of Christmas; thousands of people gather, usually outdoors in a park, to sing their favorite carols by candlelight, accompanied by a band. Carols by Candlelight hold a special significance in the hearts of most Australians. So, let’s peep into the history of Carols by Candlelight and get into the depth of Christmas celebrations.
Carols by Candlelight is the brain child of the radio veteran Norman Banks. Whilst walking home from his night-time radio shift on Christmas Eve in 1937, Norman passed a window and noticed an elderly woman sitting up in bed, listening to “Away in a Manger” being played on the radio and singing along to the carol, with her face being lit by candlelight. Wondering how many others spent Christmas alone, Norman was stirred. He decided to congregate a large group of people to all sing Christmas carols together by candlelight. The first such event was organized in the Alexandra Gardens in 1938 where 10,000 people gathered to sing carols with a choir, and the Fire Brigade Band. Thus a new Australian Christmas tradition was born which celebrated the true essence of togetherness.
