Christmas is a very special holiday in America. American Christmas tradition began quite early with the coming of Moravians of Bethlehem, in Pennsylvania in 1800’s. Though some believe the tradition of decorating Christmas tree began with the arrival of German immigrants.

Traditional Christmas rituals in America begin on Christmas Eve with the Midnight Mass held at the nearby town or city churches. The Americans all over decorate their homes with holly, mistletoes, lights, ornaments, trinkets, and twines of popcorn and candy canes. Though the Christmas traditions differ across America, because of their varied ethnic background, yet the majority of the people view the occasion of Christmas as a time of family gathering and union.
Traditional American Christmas begins on the Christmas Eve when many households across America read the ‘Night Before Christmas’ and the Bible while sitting in front of the Christmas tree. Just like other traditions followed in parts of Europe, Christmas Traditions in America is a continuation of the age old custom of sending Christmas cards, exchanging gifts and singing of Christmas carols to mark the very occasion of the birth of Jesus Christ. Special dishes like roast turkey, goose, duck or ham served with cranberry sauce, plum pudding, pumpkin pie are served and enjoyed as a great family dinner in parts of America. In places such as Alaska, Washington D.C., Boston, New Orleans, Arizona and California special Santa Claus cavern are created, boys and girls with lanterns on poles carry a large figure of a Christmas star from neighborhood door to door and a huge ox is exhibited around the streets decorated with holly and ribbons. Also various nativity scenes, better known as ‘Las Posadas’ and carol singing competitions are held at every major club and community centers. Thus, American Christmas tradition is popular for their unique and charming festive appeal.
