Baisakhi 2012

Baisakhi Mela 2012 is scheduled to take place on April 2nd in a theatre hall in Cary, North Carolina. The venue of the program is Regency Park Koka Booth Amphitheater. The function will take place between 12 PM and 9 PM. The event is being organized by Punjab Unlimited. Artists performing at the program have already been declared (Ishmeet Kaur of Sa Re Ga Ma repute).

These events are curtain raisers to the Baisakhi 2012 celebrations! Similarly, many such events will take place all around the world. Baisakhi 2012 is expected to be celebrated with equal grandeur as it is celebrated every year. In 2012, Baisakhi will be celebrated on April 14th.

The festival of Baisakhi is celebrated every year on April 13th. But every 36 years, it is observed on April 14th. As far as determining the date of Baisakhi is concerned, it is determined not as per the lunar calendar but according to solar calendar. Significance of Baisakhi Baisakhi is known for a couple of important events. Let us find out what these events are. Agricultural New Year This is mostly prevalent in Punjab, India. Since Punjab is an agriculturally rich region, people celebrate the harvest of Rabi crop by singing, dancing, and merrymaking. This is a way of thanking nature for its bountiful grace on the farmers of Punjab, for bestowing them with oilseed, wheat pulses, and sugarcane. Memory Day of Jallianwala Bagh Martyrs April 13th is also observed as a day for remembering the Jallianwala Bagh massacre during the period when the British ruled. On this day several innocent men and women were killed with bullet shots. So, the people who succumbed to the brutal act of General Dyer are remembered. The Jallianwala Bagh is not considered less than a spiritual place. Khalsa Panth Established Guru Govind Singh was the 10th Guru of Sikh. He was the one to establish the Khalsa Panth. In the year 1699, Guru Govind Singh decided to put an end to the concept of gurus in Sikhism. He announced that thereafter, Granth Sahib or the Holy Scripture would be considered as the sole Sikh Guru. So, he selected 5 leaders from amongst the many followers. April 13th is the same day when these changes had taken place and when the Holy Scripture was recognized as the Guru. Baisakhi 2012 festivities will include celebration of these major events that are mentioned above. All around the world in many places, especially where Sikh population is dominant the celebrations are expected to take place. As mentioned in the beginning, celebrations will also take place in North Carolina. Festivities take place in many other countries too. Baisakhi 2012 Events This grand event is marked by bhangra dances, acrobatics, wrestling competition, singing, and dancing to folk music. The jubilations are prominent in Amritsar in the state of Punjab. People visit Gurudwara to offer their prayers. Visiting relatives and friends, and making merry are the prominent features of this festival and the same is expected in Baisakhi 2012 too.
